At Colorado Children First:

We advocate for children. We are dedicated to ensuring that laws, policies, and programs work to their benefit.

Help make the lives of Colorado children safer.

OUR FOCUS

CCF was formed in direct response to the death of Jacob*, who was murdered by his Father as a revenge tactic against his Mother, who was trying so hard to protect him. His Mother’s cries for help to the judiciary and DHS fell on deaf ears costing Jacob* his life. Unfortunately, this case is not unique, but rather is the result of an all-too-typical scenario of a protective caregiver’s desperate efforts to protect their children.

CCF will aid protective caregivers like Jacob*’s mother through affordable legal advocacy and training of the judges and attorneys involved in cases like hers every day. The program is positioned to be accessible to victims of domestic abuse, trying to protect their children.

The goal of the program is to identify protective caregivers who fear for their children’s safety when with the other parent, and to identify attorneys who are willing to offer affordable services to these parents and drastically increase awareness and knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence amongst those in the position to decide a child’s custody.

Although severe child abuse and neglect can have lasting effects on its young victims, with the proper support and advocacy, children can move beyond the harm they have suffered at the hands of their abusers and go on to lead healthy lives.

We are a victim assistance nonprofit standing against abuse to our children.

CCF will provide affordable legal services through financial assistance and attorney referrals to parents trying to protect their children in domestic relations and protection order cases. Protective parents will be referred to our organization by victim advocacy groups, legal aid clinics, other victim-centered non-profit organizations, and will be able to find us on the internet.

CCF will provide children a voice in their own custody and protection order cases through providing them with their own representation via appointment of a caseworker and/or Guardian ad Litem (“GAL”) or Child’s Legal Representative (“CLR”). Referrals will be made by Courts and protective parents.

CCF will provide training on domestic violence evidence rules to help present a case effectively to protect the victim and child, and will provide a roster of available experts to assist in case presentation. We will target attorneys through offering CLE-accredited training through the Colorado Bar Association.

CCF will educate the judiciary on the dynamics of domestic violence including victim manipulation and child harm as a tool of control in order to better protect children before the court. CCF will work with judicial leaders to make domestic
